Abstract

Oscillatory behaviour and steadystate multiplicity are common to oxidation reactions catalyzed by transition metal catalysts of groups VIII and IB. Observations of these instabilities in isothermal systems led to the growing conviction that they are of kinetic origin. The review emphasizes the exploitation of experimental observations for the understanding of the mathematical and chemical nature of the underlying kinetic models. Observations of multiple steady states are classified in terms of multiplicity patterns (e. g. hysteresis). From the singular points associated with these patterns the necessary mathematical features of the kinetic model can be derived.
