Cryogenic-temperature transmission electron microscopy of silicone in isooctane

The efficacy of cryogenic temperature transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) was extended to the study of non-aqueous systems. The difficulties in sample preparation of such systems were carefully documented, and technical solutions have been found to overcome these problems. The success of the technique is demonstrated in direct visualization of the supramolecular microstructure of a silicone resin in isooctane. The technique is being further improved to allow higher resolution, especially with the application of post-microscopy image processing.
