Abstract

We review the theoretical and experimental progress in the field of coherent electron emission from simple molecules colliding with energetic charged particles. In particular, we outline the different theoretical approaches to tackle single ionization of diatomic molecules by impact of heavy ions. Furthermore, comparisons with the experimental measurements are made. Throughout, we emphasize the phenomenology behind these molecular processes and discuss the advantages and drawbacks of the different theoretical methods.
