Abstract
This paper discusses the influence of internal swirl-air on flame shape and height of open piloted-premixed turbulent flames stabilized in a 19 mm diameter nozzle burner. In the present work various swirl levels of values ranging from S=0.05 to 0.5 are studied. Under swirl condition, as the shapes of the swirled turbulent premixed flames are seen to be complicated compared to the conventional turbulent flame brush, flame heights are determined by analysing the outer edge of the flame images captured by digital camera. In no swirl condition, turbulent burning velocity ST is determined by measuring the mean flame height based on the inner and outer edges of the turbulent flame brush. The results obtained show that at higher Reynolds number, with increase in swirl level S, flame height decreases markedly at fuel-lean (φ =0.7) and fuel-rich (φ =1.45) condition. Further, flame heights determined with internal swirl-air are found to be lower than in no-swirl condition. These observations demonstrate the fact that burning velocity is enhanced by swirl action imposed on premixed turbulent flames. Also, ST data determined for no swirl condition as a function of equivalence ratios, φ from 0.7 to 1.45 at Reynolds number, Re = 4616 is found to be in conformity with the data in the literature.
