Abstract

Particle saturation build-up in the axial case of high gradient magnetic separation is studied theoretically. The existing model of the saturation build-up, developed for the longitudinal particle capture, is shown to be inapplicable to the axial case. This model is therefore extended to include the condition imposed upon the moments of all external forces acting on the particle at the build-up surface. This condition describing particle equilibrium is used to calculate the build-up profile both in axial and angular directions. The accumulation radius is shown to depend upon the flow regime prevailing near the build-up surface. The calculated build-up thickness fits well the available experimental data.
