Abstract

AN APPROXIMATE SOLUTION IS OBTAINED USING A FINITE ELEMENT METHOD TO SOLVE THE EQUATION OF MOTION GOVERNING THE STEADY STATE, FULLY DEVELOPED, INCOMPRESSIBLE NEWTONIAN FLOW WITHIN A STRAIGHT TUBE WITH INTERNAL FINS.THE VALUES OF THE PRODUCT LFL RE ARE COMPUTED OVER A WIDE RANGE OF VALUES FOR LENGTH, THICKNESS AND NUMBER OF FINS.IT IS OBSERVED THAT EQUIVALENT DIAMETER ALONE IS NOT A SUFFICIENT PARAMETER TO CORRELATE LFL RE VALUES.THE EQUATION LFL RE EQUALS 0.5077 PLUS 16.287 (LDL/SUB E/)/SUP 1.2/ / (LDL/SUB I/) -0.0049 * (1 - EXP (20 LSLL / LSL PLUS LLL)) PREDICTS LFL RE VALUES WITH AN AVERAGE ERROR OF 2.0 PERCENT.A LESS RIGOROUS CORRELATION IN TERMS OF LDL/SUB E//LDL/SUB I/ ALONE IS GIVEN BY LFL RE EQUALS 16.07(LDL/SUB E//LDL/SUB I/)/SUP 1.177/ THIS EQUATION PREDICTS LFL RE VALUES WITH AN AVERAGE ERROR OF 4.0 PERCENT.(A).
